SA fruit farm invests in floating solar system
A fruit farm just outside Franschoek has invested in a floating solar PV system - the first commercial system of its kind in Africa. The system has a generating capacity of 60kW and will contribute energy to farming operations such as packing and cold storage.
Factors influencing this investment decision involved the cost and reliability of ESKOM electricity, the availability of feed-in tariffs (Drakenstein Municipality) and farming more responsibly / cleaner.
Studies have shown that there are various benefits to investing in a floating solar system. These include decreased evaporation, improved energy production as water keeps the solar system cooler and less algae growth. Theft of solar panels also become much more difficult.
