Deciduous fruit industry signs charter to protect honey bees

At the Hortgro Science Technical Symposium 2017, deciduous fruit grower bodies falling under the Hortgro umbrella signed a Bee & Pollination Charter which aims to address the plight of bees in South Africa. This amid global concern about honey bee populations which have seen drastic declines with fears that the species might become extinct. The scale of the problem is massive as between 50% and 80% of the world’s food supply – fruits, vegetables, seeds – is directly or indirectly dependent on honey bee pollination.
