Hydroponic Urban Rooftop Farming for the Future

Hydroponic farming has emerged as a growing trend in commercial agriculture particularly in urban areas on city centre building rooftops. The concept of rooftop farming is whereby vacant rooftop space on inner city buildings are rented out to commercial farmers to cultivate and produce crops. Rooftop farming situates food closer to the market and overcomes long-distance logistical issues. Locally, current trends show that black small-scale agripreneurs are taking the lead in implementing hydroponic cultivation systems on urban building rooftops. Commercial banks have recognized the growing trend, and have provided investment and support to emergent rooftop farmers. In addition, hydroponic rooftop agriculture systems can be coupled with other resource efficiency measures, like bio-reactors and solar powered systems, enabling a food production system that is ideal in a sustainability context.
